The Federal Skilled Trade Class is intended for individuals seeking permanent residency based on their qualifications in a skilled trade. As of January 1, 2015, candidates interested in applying for the Federal Skilled Trades Program must use the Express Entry system as the means of application.

  • It is mandatory to intend to reside outside of the province of Quebec (Please note: The province of Quebec has its own selection process for skilled workers. If you plan on residing in Quebec, please refer to the information on Quebec-selected skilled workers for more details).
  • Meet the necessary proficiency levels in English or French for each language ability, including speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
  • Possess a minimum of two years of full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time work experience) within the last five years prior to the application, in a skilled trade.
  • Satisfy the job requirements for the skilled trade as outlined in the National Occupational Classification (NOC), excluding the requirement for a certificate of qualification, and hold either a valid offer of full-time employment for a minimum duration of one year, or a certificate of qualification in the relevant skilled trade issued by a provincial or territorial authority in Canada.
  • It is necessary to meet the admissibility criteria for Canada.
  • Residency outside of the province of Quebec is a requirement.
Skilled work experience

The following major and minor groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) are currently recognized by the Federal Skilled Trades Program:

  • Major Group 72, industrial, electrical and construction trades,
  • Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades,
  • Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production,
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators,
  • Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks, and
  • Minor Group 633, butchers and bakers.
The major groups under the NOC are further divided into various occupations.
